Dash Cam & Car Accidents

Will a Dash Cam Actually Help me After a Car Accident?

Car accidents often result in two separate stories concerning what actually occurred. In some instances, a negligent driver may try to deny any responsibility for the accident.

In other instances, we may not be able to recall exactly what occurred, or we may not even have seen the actions of the negligent driver leading up to the accident. While memory can prove to be faulty, a dash cam can record exactly what occurred and be available for evidence at a later date.

The Benefits of Having a Dash Camera Available

As personal injury attorneys, we often use video evidence to demonstrate who was at fault in a motor vehicle crash. The old adage that “a picture is worth a thousand words” can be in many instances true when it comes to arguing a car accident case in court.

  • Reckless Driving There are instances where the footage from a dash camera will clearly show that a driver was reckless, when through a stoplight or was driving at excessive speed right before the accident occurred.
  • Careless DrivingEven if the camera does not catch all of the accident, it may show that a driver was driving carelessly in moments before the accident happened.
  • Severity of ImpactDash camera footage may also show the severity of impact during a motor vehicle crash.
  • Property DamageDash cameras can be helpful in proving that particular property damage was due to the accident.

Dash Cameras Do Have Limitations

It is important, however, to remember that a dash camera does not always tell the entire story. Sometimes the camera is not pointing in the right direction to properly view the accident, and the footage on a camera in some instances may be too grainy to be useful. In short, lawyers still have to do the work of investigating the accident, interviewing all the witnesses, and taking measurements at the accident scene to prove how an accident occurred.
