Middletown is CT’s First City To Adopt Speed Cameras

Middletown is the first CT city to adopt speed cameras. Learn what drivers should know and how automated enforcement may improve road safety.

MIDDLETOWN: FIRST CITY IN CONNECTICUT TO LAUNCH SPEED & RED-LIGHT CAMERAS

Middletown has officially become the first city in Connecticut to install both speed and red-light cameras as part of the state’s new traffic enforcement initiative. This move follows two other Connecticut towns – Washington and Marlborough – which activated speed cameras earlier in 2025 as part of a pilot program aimed at improving road safety.

Where are the Cameras Located?

There are currently three active camera sites in Middletown, with more locations under consideration. The current cameras are placed in: Washington Street/ Route 66 near Camp Street, Country Club Road near Moody Elementary school, and Westfield Street near Spencer Elementary school. These locations were selected based on traffic volume, crash data, and proximity to schools. All three areas are known for heavy speeding, frequent pedestrian and bicycle use, and elevated crash rates, making them high-priority zones for enforcement.

What Happens Now?

As of July 7, 2025, Middletown officially began issuing tickets to drivers caught by these cameras. Drivers going 10+ mph over the posted speed limit will result in a $50 fine plus a $15 processing fee. Repeat offenses will cost $75 per violation. Tickets are issued to the vehicle’s registered owner, not necessarily the driver behind the wheel — so think twice before lending out your car! Cameras are monitored for accuracy, and violations include photo evidence and time-stamped details. The revenue collected goes toward furthering road safety improvements, not general city funds.

Bottom Line

If you’re driving through Middletown, ease off the gas – especially near the schools. This should be done in every town regardless of the cameras. These cameras are here to protect lives. Better to arrive a few minutes late than with a ticket (or worse).
