Bicyclist killed by hit-and-run drunk driver
With spring well underway now, Connecticut residents should be able to more fully enjoy the ability to ride bikes outside. Whether for exercise, transportation or both, it is undoubtedly a great way to appreciate the fresh air and spend a day. Sadly, however, the risks associated with this pleasurable past time can be great when bicyclists must share the roads with negligent drivers.
One bicyclist recently lost his life due to the completely unnecessary and risky choice made by a drunk driver who hit and killed him in New Haven. the accident occurred in the middle of the day on a Sunday when the man was simply riding along the side of a road. A 43-year-old woman in a vehicle was seen by witnesses to hit the man on the bike, throwing him over the nearby guardrail. He is said to have died within a matter of minutes. It is not known how fast the woman was driving when she struck the bicyclist.
As if hitting the cyclist was not enough, the woman did not stop. Another driver managed to get a picture of her vehicle and other people called into report sightings of her vehicle. Eventually she was found by authorities. After failing field sobriety tests, she was found to have a blood alcohol content of over 0.20 percent and was also driving on a suspended license.
Tragedies like these happen too often, leaving innocent people injured or mourning losses. Connecticut residents may be able to learn about their options for compensation by talking with a lawyer at these times.
